Our collective aim in coming together is to raise funds and public awareness to our local and global environment. We believe that the time has come to engage the environment and adapt to the immense changes we are facing due to increased pressure we humanity is placing on the environment. In 1950 there were 3.5 billion consumers on planet Earth. this will have doubled to 7 billion by the year 2010. We live in a throw away society that is turning our planet into a toxic dump. This is not acceptable to future generations and we in coming together for Galway Earth Festival wish to represent generations yet to come "We do not own the Earth we are merely borrowing it from future generations". "At present we are looking to governments to find escape from the ecological wasteland we have created. But people in authority have gained their ascendence by harnessing the power of technology and mass communication. If we are to lessen our dependence on machines and achieve a closer relationship with nature, we cannot expect to gain support from the ruling elite, for they have vested interest in maintaining the status quo. Nor will help come from the mass media, which atract public attention by stressing problems rather than advancing public solutions. If change is to come it will have to come from below - from the ground up. It will, in fact, have to be a truly grass-roots movement."
The Therapeutic Garden - Donald Norfolk Galway Earth Festival aims to educate the general public on the many positive eco businesses, environment and social projects and positive media work that are together creating a more positive climate. |
